How To Do the Drop Test

By David Muhlestein, About.com

The drop test is a simple test used to determine if your paintballs are either too hard or too brittle.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Less than 5 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Take a random paintball out of its bag and hold out about six feet over a concrete surface.
  2. Drop the ball and then catch it after the first bounce and before it bounces again.
  3. Repeat the process and count how many times it takes until the ball breaks on contact with the concrete.
  4. Repeat the process with five balls from the bag and determine the average number of drops for the paint to break.

Tips:

  1. An ideal batch of paintballs will break after, on average, 3-5 drops onto concrete.
  2. Paint that takes 1 or 2 bounces to break is brittle and is much more likely break in the barrel or chamber of your gun.
  3. A batch of balls that takes more than 5 bounces to break is hard and will more likely bounce off of your target without breaking.
