Do Paintballs Freeze?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Do Paintballs Freeze?
Answer: In a household freezer paintballs do not freeze solid. The shells become warped, dimpled and brittle while the internal liquid becomes thick and mushy. When you shoot these paintballs they often break in the barrel and, even if they don't, the warped shells make them so inaccurate that hitting any target is a matter of luck. Additionally, cold paintballs will wick moisture from the air which will make the paintballs break in your hopper and create a gooey mess.

There is a possibility that putting paintballs in a colder freezer or in liquid nitrogen would make them freeze to the point of being rock solid. The shells would still warp and dimple so they would be very inaccurate to shoot. Additionally, the balls would thaw so fast that it would make actually playing a game with them impractical.
