Answer: The brief answer is that paintball guns were invented by the Nelson Paint Company in the early 1970s (patent awarded in 1974) and were intended to be used for marking trees that needed to be cut down form a distance. The first game of paintball was played on June 27, 1981 by 12 men: Lionel Atwill, Ken Barrett, Bob Carlson, Joe Drindon, Charles Gaines, Jerome Gary, Bob Gurnsey, Bob Jones, Hayes Noel, Carl Sandquist, Ronnie Simkins and Richie White.
