Comfort
Choose something comfortable. An all-day trip to the field isn't the best place to break in a new pair of shoes and find out that they give you blisters.
Terrain
Match your shoes to the surface you will be playing on. If you are going to be playing on a rocky surface, find shoes that will help you grip the surface without slipping. Cleats will not work on rocks. If you are going to be playing on a field or if it has recently rained, cleats are almost a must.
Know Your Feet and Ankles
Match your shoes to the support you need. If you have a tendency to roll ankles, try to wear shoes that give you more ankle support. If you have regular foot pain, add shoe inserts into your shoes.
Socks
Make sure you wear comfortable socks. Even a good shoe can become miserable if you are wearing lousy socks that don't breath or provide inadequate cushioning. I recommend a good pair of thick cotton socks for most days of play and if it's cold to double up.
