The Good Sports

Tuesday July 8, 2008
I know exactly what type of person I like to play paintball with - someone who is able to play the game while following the rules and trying to have fun. I also know exactly what type of person I don't like to play paintball with - someone so obsessed with winning that he disregards all the rules and his focus is not on enjoyment but personal aggrandizement.

While many paintballers fall into the first category, there are a few that really understand the art of good sportsmanship and those are the players I really like to play with. While it's difficult to explain, the player who is willing to congratulate you on a good shot or is willing to go out of his way to help a new player is someone I like to have on my team or to play against. A player goes out of his way to make sure he lets another player hide after a paint check and always offers a surrender before lighting you up is the player who makes the whole day of paintball a better experience.

While many players are out to have fun and generally follow the rules, the ones who make it a point to play as they wish others would play are those who I always look for at the field.

For me, paintball has never been about winning, when I’m on the field I’m out there to have fun, irregardless of what team I’m on or how imbalanced things are, those things just don’t matter. I’ll play as the underdog and lose and have more fun than playing on a team full of overkilling scumbags.

Great article.

Good article. This is what I explain to players when I’m refing. I also try to tell them to work together and communicate. Work out a game plan and don’t lose your front players because you didn’t want to shoot a little more agressively. Believe me, being the “last man standing” in a 10 on 10 game hurts when three opponents light you up. LOL
